Prediction | Audio search engine

Ever heard of a song, but had no possible way of finding it? Like a non-vocal, totally instrumental song you couldn’t even remember the lyrics to, a song that doesn’t have even a single word based on which you can google it up.

Me, I’m the zen master of finding music even when the only frame of reference I have is a single word in that song or its time and place in, say, a movie or TV show (sure, the likes of IMDb and YouTube help a great deal here cos’ there’s usually people asking the same questions as I am and luckily there’s other people who know the answers to them). I SherlockHolmes that stuff down with a 100% success rate, but when it comes to finding instrumental music my knowledge dwindles and shivers away.

Sure there’s web-based tools like Songtapper that try to help people find music with the help of the space-bar and the predisposition that you actually know how the song you want to tap sounds. How accuarate their current results are I don’t really know, but a year or so ago their range only covered mainstream music.

So there’s gotta be something better than song-tapper, right? Well, atm the best I can find is VidtoMp3. When even YouTube comments can’t give me the answer I want I can now at least easily download the video’s audio as an .mp3. It’s also handy if you can’t download the audio file anywhere else…if a video with that song exists, that is. And don’t expect solid bit-rate quality either.

But I have a feeling that I’m not the only one thinking of an universal audio search engine to which I could stream that YouTube video and this search engine would go through it’s ever-growing audio database and find me the result I want. Heck, it could even distinguish between certain versions of that song, like mixes and remixes which are a dime a dozen in electronic music. Since there’s so much music going around it’s really a shame that some of it is so hard to come by. And where would this audio beast feed you ask? Well, ever since web 2.0 sites offer online music databases. The likes of Last FM, Deezer, Songza, TheSixtyOne only to name a few. Their range has well passed the mainstream and if the web has something to offer, that’s everything! Literally, EVERYTHING:) We need a Technorati for music. What you want, when you want.

Audio | AC/DC – Rock ‘N Roll Train

Man this brings me back to the early to mid- 90’s when the likes of Aerosmith, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Bon Jovi and co. were on top of their game and rock’n’ roll dominated the airwaves. There’s also a version of the music video made in Excel, but I’m not sure whether it’s a case of weird excel nostalgia or pure experimentation. But that’s totally beside the point: this song is proof that ‘old fucks’ can still kick-ass! With ease!!!

Prediction | More ‘rapping-about-science’ videos

Wanna learn-by-rap?

Thanks to this video a whole lot of people now know about the Large hadron collider (and if you pay close attention to the lyrics you even know what it does) and the whole is-the-world-coming-to-and-end affair’s gone so far that the LHC has practically become our bastard love child of some sort…Think of it this way: when the people at the LHC declared they have to close it down till spring 2009 due to equipment failure, everybody instantly spread the online word as if we were talking about the iPhone’s next widget or sth. When’s the last time you were this updated on your local particle physics facility?

Now comes this video, only this time the topic is astrobiology. Surprisingly cool, actually!

See a pattern?:)…

Sure the LHC videos’s got more than 3 million views due to huge publicity spawned by panic, and this video currently isn’t even near the 6 figure number, but it’s apparent that with presenting difficult topics in a fun and easy-to-understand way you can’t go wrong (yeah, somebody give me a Nobel prize right now!).

MY PREDICTION:

  • before the LHC boom fades away we’ll see a couple more of these rapping-about-science videos (not that difficult a prediction really, but as far as I know I’m the first to make it:P)
  • the “Astrobiology 2008″ video will become a mild hit, comparison to the LHC videos will be inevitable, as it will be with all future videos of this sort
  • if enough memorable clever and fun educational videos are made, people will start talking about implementing similar methods into our school systems for better teaching/learning results (which hopefully will occur regardless of everything I’ve said so far!)

So whattcha waiting for? Got a freakishly mind-blowing thing to share with the world what we don’t already know about? Well, get movin’ and make a song out of it. As long as it’s got rhymes, we’ll love you for it:)

Then chop chop!…or rather, hip hop;)

Audio | The Verve – Love Is Noise

…because I can be up to date with new music too;). I’m sadly just noticing there’s an ever growing shortage of it in my music library lately.

Audio | Sly & The Family Stone – Everyday People

The quality of the video isn’t that great, but the upbeat funk of the song makes up for it!:)

Audio | DJ Johnny Red – Blackout Cries Mary

If this video were an old cassette tape I’d have overplayed the fucker in two days tops! The song is a mashup of Muse’s melody and Jimmy Hendrix’s vocals, but if somebody told me it was recorded way back in the hippie era I wouldn’t have known better. A tour-de-force of modern mixing technology and a rare case of a mashup easily exceeding the original!:)

Audio | Mattafix – Passer By

Forgot where I stumbled upon this one, for a change there’s an actual official video to go along:P

All I know is it’s kind of soothing on the ears in this dreary stormy weather, and that’s gotta count for something!
